Checking out the Czechs

The sun is splitting the sky in Edinburgh. No wind, so a little warmth from the sun, which is low in the sky even at noon at this time of year. I've been researching Scottish connections in Czech Republic for my tour this afternoon and have found that the part called Moravia today was largely peopled by the Celts before they fled the invasion of Germanic tribes around 60 BC. This, I am told explains the number of red haired people living there today (thanks Gerry).

I also found out that in the 12 Century, one of the Norman knights invited into Scotland by David 1st to establish the Feudal land management system was one Ferkin De Moravia and he settled in the North East. The name eventually changed to Moray, or Murray and one of the descendants was William De Moray whio led the resistance to the English occupation in the reign of Edward 1st, the so called 'Hammer of the Scots' Sir William was an ally of our other great William, Wallace!

History says Ferkin De Moray came from a Flemish family and I'm still trying to nail the link to the Czech Republic. Any help would be welcome. Enjoy your weekend, Bill
